How Do You Become A High School Counselor?
The duties of a high school counselor includes helping students choose career paths, helping decide what college to attend, assisting in applying for financial aid, helping overcome behavior and emotional problems and other areas that pertain to high school students. A high school counselor works with students, parents and teachers to help students reach their potential and leave high school with a solid plan for the future. Take 4 years of college to earn a bachelor’s degree. Concentrate on psychology, communications and social science classes to help earn the degree. Some high school counselors major in secondary education with a minor in psychology or social science. Check with your state to see if a master’s degree is needed. Most states require some master course work before becoming a high school counselor.
