Since the task of a drill sergeant, which is a position specific to the Army, is to make civilians into soldiers, many think of drill sergeants as the backbone of the Army. Regardless of ability, physical condition or time spent in the Army, you must be a non-commissioned officer in order to become a drill sergeant. Most often staff sergeants and sergeant first class are accepted into the Drill Sergeant School, but sometimes sergeants are accepted as well.
