How Do You Become A Diesel Mechanic?
• Prepare for a diesel mechanic career while still in high school. • Take electronic, automotive and diesel repair high school courses. • Complete core courses (math, physics, physical education, English and computer) required for community and vocational college admission. • Obtain a high school diploma or G.E.D. • Enroll in a college or vocational program that offers a diesel mechanic certificate or associate’s degree program. The program may take 6 months to 2 years to complete. • Learn how to read manuals and communicate with customers and co-workers. • Take part in classroom instruction, lab work and hands-on experience. • Obtain a state commercial driver’s license. This license is needed when test driving the vehicles that have been repaired or are in need of repair. • Seek an employer that is willing to give you on-the-job training while you are working toward a degree. • Continue working on your certificate or associate’s degree even if you find a job offering training.
