Licensed chemical dependency counselors help others overcome their addictions to alcohol, drugs and other substances. To become a counselor in the state of Texas, you must be licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services. A license is rewarded based on academic experience, hours of supervised work with addicts, recommendations from licensed counselors and the completion of two exams. Earn a 2- or 4-year degree in human behavior and development, psychology or other human services degree from an accredited college or university. Complete 4,000 hours of supervised work with patients suffering from chemical dependency.
