Auto mechanics are expected to diagnose problems quickly. For some this skill is almost intuitive and honed by of years of experience, while others require more formalized training. Mechanics generally possess analytical minds and are strong communicators. The job market is expanding. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, employment for auto mechanics is expected to rise 5 percent from 2008 to 2018. Although certification is not required for the job, it can lead to greater career advancement. Take classes in automotive repair while in high school, particularly Automotive Youth Education Service (AYES) courses if available, because they are certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
