Here are the steps in becoming a CHP Officer. Submit an application. This can be obtained at any California Highway Patrol(CHP) Office, online at www.CHPcareers.com, or via email at Recruiting@chp.ca.gov. You can also obtain an application by calling a CHP recruiter at 888-422-4756. Take a 125 question written exam. The exam consists of multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions and tests you for comprehension, reading and spelling on a 12th grade level. In order to meet the minimum requirements to take the exam, a person must be between the ages of 20-35 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and be a United States citizen.
