Most lifeguards have strong swimming or surfing backgrounds(good for using a paddle board). Step 2 It is important to find out if the beach that you are interested in trains their own lifeguards or takes them from the academy. The academy is a challenging but a good program run by the state. If the department rakes lifeguards from the academy, ask them for an application. If the department trains their own lifeguards it is a good idea to start volunteering for the department (community service) and getting to know the lifeguards. It makes it much easier to get a job if they know who you are, and you get a good feel for the environment you will be working in.
