How Do You Become A Ballroom Dancing Instructor?
If you want to be a ballroom instructor you have to study hard, be humorous and show people how to have fun while learning. Be creative. You need to go to a good school with excellent planning, great programs and dance masters that train and teach teachers. If the school does not provide good coaches and trainers find another school – Don’t waist your time! Expect at least four years of good training before becoming a student-teacher with a supervisor behind you. Always keep an open mind to street dancing when entering as a first time teacher. This can be valuable to you later on. Keep in mind too, dancing competition doesn’t necessarily make you a good teacher. There is not many good Independent Brand Name Schools out there. In my 30 years of dancing and teaching I’ve not once seen an independent dance studio produce good quality teachers yet! At least in my area. “If the school is center around ego…” Get Out! If the school does not provide a program for selling and marketing, then you will have to go to a college to get your training. In dealing with the public you will have to have some language, selling & book skills or you will get clobbered trying to sell dance lessons. Beware of the famous coaches or trainers that come into the schools occasionally. They charge money! And, rightly so! They are trying to make a living too! Unless the owner, teachers, dance master, trainer of the school has a day to day planned schedule for their student-teachers, the school is useless. Most good schools have a dance master / trainer that works and is paid for by the owner with good programs for student-teachers. The cost to student-teachers should be free and they may ask you to sign a contract, which is called a no compete contract. This is a contract promising the studio you will not teach for someone else within a certain area or radius amount of that studio. This is in case you quit and decide to teach for someone else. Make sure you read such contracts before signing them, it could affect you in the future if you plan to work somewhere else. Good Luck! www.stardancer.net
