There is a long-distance telephone scam — in addition to all the other scams going around — that your should be aware of. It can waste your time while increasing your telephone bills. Beware if you receive an email, letter, voice mail or other communication claiming to have important information regarding your family, contest winnings, finances, even sex chats or other offerings. Not only are the promises often bogus, but the telephone number that looks like a regular long-distance number with only a three digit prefix, may be an international number that will inflate your telephone bill. You may not know that the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean all can have that three digit prefix though the latter two are charged at the international rate. For example, a number with the prefix of “809” goes to the Dominican Republic. “306” is actually in Canada and “876” goes to Jamaica.
