How Do You Avoid Selling Tobacco Products To Someone Illegally?
• Post signs stating that ID will be required for all purchases of tobacco. If you are a manager, instruct your employees to point out the sign if someone protests. • Obviously, you don’t need to ID everyone. Some people will obviously be much older than 18. • Ask for ID. Be careful. Some underage people attempt to make themselves look older so they can buy tobacco. For example, putting on a fake beard. • Take a careful look at that ID to make sure it isn’t fake. • Find out from your state licensing bereau the marks which prove IDs are legitimate. In some states, the state seal will appear if held at an angle. In others, identifying marks will appear under a black light. If a customer is bothering you because you won’t sell them tobacco, get the store manager immediately. • If you are the manager (or one is not available), tell the custumer that the company has a strict policy against selling tobacco to minors. Let them know that you are not willing to sacrifice your job.
