The dreaded effects of pregnancy related nausea, also known as “morning sickness”, can be a demoralizing side effect of one of the happiest times in a woman’s life. However, there are ways to minimize the onset of nausea during pregnancy by using a few simple techniques. Avoid strong smells. Really intense smells, like that of a wet dog, or cooked fish, can induce an overwhelming wave of nausea. Avoid these triggering smells in your own home and have your partner go ahead of you and “assess” for these smells when you are out and about in public. Stay away from gas producing foods. These foods, including beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, cucumbers, lettuce, peppers, sauerkraut, onions, spinach, and others, can cause an excessive production of colonic gas that leads to stomach upset and nausea.
