The “Freshman 15” is not an inevitability. There are steps you can take to make sure you avoid gaining weight during your first year, or at any other point while you are in college. Eating the right diet can not only help you avoid gaining weight, but also give you a clear head and energy so you can learn as much as possible and focus on college. Get calorie information and nutrition facts on the food you are served in the cafeteria, fast food outlets or dining halls. Do not eat anything if you are not sure of the calorie contents. Avoid deep fried and breaded food, as this is most certainly calorie dense and will cause you to gain weight. Stick to tomato and herb sauces on pasta rather than Alfredo, cream and cheese sauces, which can have more calories than a cheeseburger. Limit meat intake to once per day or less. Look for alternative sources of protein, such as a bean burrito or taco, soup, fish or chicken (baked or broiled). Experiment with new foods and always have fresh food or a
