Deaf people can encounter great difficulty in communicating with others. Public situations are particularly troublesome, where strangers who do not use sign language surround them. Imagine going shopping in a place where no one speaks your language! You can help a deaf person who is having difficulty in public by remembering a few simple tips. Communicate with a deaf person by facing forward and allowing them to see your lips at all times. Do not look around or turn away. Speak to the deaf person directly, even if someone is interpreting your words. If they have a friend who is signing your words, pause every so often. This allows the deaf person to face each of you in turn. Keep your hands, food and other items away from your mouth. Remove anything in your mouth, such as candy or gum. Enunciate your words.
