The installation of ceramic tile in a kitchen or bathroom can add value to any home. Unfortunately, if the tile is not installed properly, all of the effort is for nothing. Installing ceramic tile around a bathtub is the most common of all installations. If installed properly, ceramic tile can finish the look of any bathroom. Remove the existing wall components to expose studs. Studs need to be free of all nails, screws, glue, etc. Install backer board in a thickness equal to removed covering thickness. Backer board should be screwed and glued to studs to ensure limited movement and shifting. Fill gap between backer board and wall board with caulk. This will help to reduce moisture transfer between products. If not using pre-mixed mortar, blend mortar mix with water until the mixture is slightly thicker than peanut butter.
