My husband is a high school football coach and gets very little appreciation. Of course, that’s partly because most people don’t know what’s really involved in coaching. Anyway, this article is to remedy that! Step 1 Appreciate the amount of time a coach is at school, away from their home and family. From the beginning of August until the end of October (longer if the team earns a spot in the playoffs), a coach stays after school 3-4 hours most days and 7-8 hours on game nights. On Saturdays, someone has to drive and swap team video with coaches from next week’s opposing team, and on Sundays, coaches dissect videos of their own team and the opposing team. After the season is over, weight lifting and conditioning continues through the winter and spring. Even when school is out in the summer, coaches are at the school running weight lifting and conditioning exercises and going to various football camps in the area.
