How Do You Apply For Lost Social Security Card?
According to the Social Security Administration, you are not required to have a Social Security card as long as you know your Social Security number. However, it is useful to keep your card on hand. If you’ve lost your card and need another, there is no free for a replacement. You are limited to three replacements in one year or 10 lifetime (excluding required replacements because of events such as changes in marital or citizenship status). You can apply for a replacement Social Security card in person or by mail in most cases. Obtain and fill out Form SS-5 (Application for Social Security card). The SS-5 is available online from the SSA website (link below). You must print it on white 8-1/2 by 11-inch paper (if you are outside the U.S., 8 1/4 by 11.7 inches is acceptable). You may also get a form by going to your local Social Security office or by calling toll free (800) 772-1213 or for TTY (800) 325-0778.
