When you apply for FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), you have to deal with two different deadlines. The federal deadline, which is usually around June 30 of the year you have been attending–meaning you still could have applied for aid for the 2008-09 school year on June 30, 2008)–and the state deadline. The state deadline is the cutoff date for when the school starts giving out award letters for both federal and state funds. Applying after the state deadline means running the risk that the school will have handed out all the grants and scholarships before you can get to them.
