How Do You Anchor A Small Boat?
Anchoring even a small boat requires the appropriate equipment. Here’s how to select the right anchoring equipment and technique. This is advice suitable for very small boats such as rowboats and small outboards, sailing dinghies, canoes, and similar small boats — not for larger vessels… Step 1 Choose the right anchor for the bottom conditions — a Danforth style anchor (with flat flukes) is good for bottoms comprised of sand or mud. A grapnel style will hold in rocky bottoms. A mushroom or “river” anchor is just a weight, OK for temporarily holding position, as over a fishing spot, but don’t rely on these anchors to hold against any significant wind or current. Step 2 Fasten one of the shackles to one end of the chain. Use a bit of wire passed through the eye of the shackle pin and twisted around the shackle to prevent the pin from backing out. Step 3 Tie one end of the line to this shackle, passing the line twice through the shackle, then secure with two half hitches. Or, make a
