Mantles can be a lovely finishing touch to any fireplace. Even if the fireplace is new, an antique or custom mantle can add the look of age and style. Better yet, this is a project you can do yourself, saving the expense of hiring a professional. Dry-fit the mantle against the fireplace and use a level to make sure it’s level. Make marks on the wall along the top and sides of the mantle. Measure and record the width of the mantle’s top (the width of the horizontal, middle section of the mantle). Go to the horizontal marks you made on the wall in Step 1, and make mark the same distance below it, then add 1/2 inch below that and make another mark. Do the same for the vertical marks on the wall. Measure the length along the top of the mantle and cut a two-by-four that is a little shorter than this measurement.
