Make marks on the wall along the top and sides of the mantle. Measure and record the width of the mantle’s top (the width of the horizontal, middle section of the mantle). Go to the horizontal marks you made on the wall in Step 1, and make mark the same distance below it, then add 1/2 inch below that and make another mark. Do the same for the vertical marks on the wall. Measure the length along the top of the mantle and cut a two-by-four that is a little shorter than this measurement.
