As on their modern descendants, adjustment of these derailers is needed from time to time because the cable that connects the derailer to the shifter body stretches with use. Shift your gears to smallest rear sprocket and the largest front chainring. Loosen the anchor bolt that secures the shifter cable to the rear derailer. The bolt will be found on the derailer and can be loosened using either an adjustable or proper size spanner wrench. Check alignment of the derailer pulley.
