How Do You Add Red Worms To A Container?
Red worms for home compost bins often arrive dehydrated and sometimes either chilly or too hot from their trip via mail order. Most red wigglers, also called red worms or Eisenia fetida, go out for shipment on Mondays or Tuesdays by USPS Priority Mail so they arrive on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday with minimal mortality. You can prepare for their arrival so that they soon feel comfortable in their new home. About a week before the expected arrival of your red wigglers, set up your worm bin with moist bedding and a small amount of introductory kitchen compost. This gives the scraps time to begin to grow bacteria and fungi on their surfaces, which the worms feed on. Try to be home on the estimated day of arrival or have the worms shipped to a location where you can promptly take the package indoors. Open the box and remove the cloth container containing the worms packed in peat moss. Gently open the bag and overturn it so that the worms and the peat moss roll to the top of your worm bin
