How Do You Add Peat Moss To Soil?
Peat moss is an excellent fertilizer for lawn and garden soils because of its ability to absorb water like a sponge. Natural peat moss, or Sphagnum moss, contains a system of capillary tubes which provide the moss with this unique ability of extraordinary moisture absorption and retention. Peat moss grows in thick clumps and is commonly found in bogs, ponds, and swamps in subtropical and temperate regions. Peat moss fertilizer consists of ground-up, dried peat moss that is artificially produced in peat moss “gardens.” Aerate the soil using a metal rake. Aeration loosens up the soil, providing a healthy foundation for peat moss. Shovel the peat moss from the bag into a bucket. Cover the top soil with 1 to 2 inches of peat moss. Using the bucket, spread the peat moss evenly over the soil’s surface. Till the peat moss with a gardening hoe to insure thorough and complete mixing of the peat moss and top soil.
