The organ donor registry in California asks people if they want to be organ and tissue donors. They can say yes, or they can modify their gift. They can choose which specific organs and/or tissue types they want to include or exclude in their gift of life. If someone did not make these decisions before they passed away, then their next of kin is asked to decide. When asked, many families agree to donate organs, but often say no to tissue. I work with donor families, and many have expressed such regret years down the line, when they have heard about the help that tissue donation gives and/or met tissue recipients.
