Many people do not know this, but anyone can go to a Native American powwow. While there are certain events and ceremonies that are considered sacred to Native Americans and as such are not for public viewing, powwows aren’t one of those events. If you are planning to attend a powwow for the first time, here are some things to keep in mind. Be respectful. Don’t point or make fun of the dancers, or anyone else for that matter. Native Americans prize respect above all and if you are behaving in a way that is less than respectful, you will find yourself feeling very unwelcome. You can take pictures when people are dancing, but if a dancer is off by themselves, you will need to ask permission to take their picture.
