How do we start the Ketogenic Diet?
The Ketogenic diet is started in hospital, so we can monitor your child’s toleration for the diet and your child’s safety as the body adjusts to using ketones for energy. It usually takes 3-5 days to accomplish this. During that time, as well as medical monitoring, the very experienced Ketogenic Diet dietitians will provide education and guidance for managing the diet at home. After discharge, you will have access to ongoing support of the multidisciplinary Ketogenic Diet team, which includes doctors, nurses, social workers and nutritionists. You will be required to come to the Ketogenic Diet Clinic soon after discharge, and thereafter on a regular basis, so we can monitor your child’s health. Family commitment and regular follow up by a team of health care professionals specializing in the ketogenic diet is essential for the diet to be safe and successful.
