How do we protect the crucial role of investigative journalism?
In a 24/7 era when people can feel overwhelmed by the massive amounts of information that flood down on them each and every day some of it important, most of it not why does investigative journalism matter more than ever? Because it helps people, as citizens, better understand what is happening in their society and how they can best deal with it. And if that isn’t what journalism is all about in its best sense, what’s the point? A goal of this column in the past 16 months has been to discuss the many profound changes occurring in this 21st century in the way that ‘news’ is being produced by journalists and consumed by audiences, and to try to ensure that one always serves the interests of the other. But at the heart of all of this is not how we gather the information or in what format, on which platform or within which business model because when all is said and done, those are details.
