How do we prevent landslides in the future?
Landslides occur because large masses of unconsolidated earth and rock do not have the structural integrity necessary to resist the force of gravity. Although trees might help prevent extremely small slips of land, their root systems would be of no help in solidifying large hillsides. You’ve probably seen numerous news footage of whole forests sliding down a hillside, along with houses, roads, cars, and fences. Landslides are normal, natural and to be expected, both now and in the future. It takes an enormous and expensive effort on the part of humans to keep hillsides where they are and not where we don’t want them to be. IF it were possible and cheap, you’d never hear about all the land/mudslides in California.
