How do we organise a scheme of work that promotes these approaches?
Mike is passionate about making mathematics accessible, interesting and enjoyable. To seek to achieve this he uses problem posing and problem solving approaches, believing that solving puzzles and problems is a common, fundamental human characteristic: the desire to explore and seek answers to questions. Mike has not used a textbook or published scheme for the past 30 years; instead he creates ‘modules’ of work based upon simple starting points and numerous extension tasks. Since 1971, Mike has taught in a primary school, two secondary schools and as a SL between 1986 and 1995 taught in mixed-ability groups (without the use of textbooks) across the 11-16 age range. From 1995 to 2005 he taught in three teacher training institutions and has lead workshops for Local Authorities, schools and conferences in the UK, Poland, Gran Canaria, the United Arab Emirates and Eritrea. He has been a freelance consultant since 2006. All of these experiences enabled Mike to write several books both for t
