How do we make a foreign exchange student feel welcome/ happy?
The most important thing to remember is that she is NOT a guest. She is a member of your family and should be treated that way. She should have responsibilities just like you do. She should do dishes, take out trash, share with you. The next thing is INTRODUCE. Introduce her to everyone! Not just your friends, but others she may be interested in meeting. Make sure she participates in extracurricular activities — music and/or sports. That’s where you make friends! Take her shopping and make sure her clothes help her fit in! If she is Korean, she has been wearing a uniform to school and definitely NOT makeup! Make sure all of that is appropriate! School work. It’s not your job to tutor. However, make sure she understands what the teacher expects from her — especially how homework works! That’s a different experience for many exchange students.
