How do we increase investment in research and development in the southern Gulf?
• The fishery is one of the most important Maritime industries, but this fact is not widely known. Increased investment would probably occur after there was a better appreciation of the importance of fishery-related research. • We need more work on coordinating funding and research. Research centers should be conducting complementary research and not duplicating each others efforts. A well-coordinated network would probably attract funds because it would simplify the work for the funding agencies. • It was noted that there has been some generous recent funding for equipment and infrastructure but that there was little funding for the people required to operate these new facilities. • It was noted that a well-organized, multi-disciplinary, multi-partnered research proposal would satisfy the requirements of ACOA and other funding agencies. • ACOA funding will be open to all sectors of the Atlantic economy including mining, forestry, medicine, agriculture, oil and gas, biotechnology, info
