How do value-added measures account for influences in student performance outside of teacher effectiveness?
Value-added measures all use certain variables to “control for” a variety of variables, from prior years’ test scores to student race/ethnicity to free or reduced price lunch status (which is a widely used indicator of socioeconomic status) to peer test scores. The Measures of Effective Teaching project seeks to control these variables through the random assignment of students to teachers in the second year of the study.
