How do unschoolers present the curriculum description?
The Virginia Home Instruction statute says parents must “provide a description of the curriculum to be followed for the coming year.” For those filing under Option 1 or 2, there is no definition as to what that description must contain. Some Option 1 and 2 families provide a description as brief as a sentence or paragraph. Under Option 4, the law requires parents to submit “a program of study or curriculum which, in the judgment of the division superintendent, includes the standards of learning…for language arts and mathematics.” Unschoolers generally don’t use Option 3.
