There is a black and a white wire coming out of the fan itself, as you said, and there is a black and a white wire coming out of the lighting assembly. Here is how they should be connected: First, make SURE the wall switch is turned OFF! Screaming and cursing as you fall off the ladder will not exactly help the situation. The WHITE wire from the fan unit should be connected to the WHITE wire coming from the socket itself (the thing the light bulb screws into). The BLACK wire from the fan should be connected to either one of the wires coming from the SWITCH on the light kit (ignore switch wire color). The OTHER wire from the switch should be connected to the Black wire coming from the socket the bulb screws into. Now, turn on the wall switch so the fan is operating, and pull the chain on the light switch.
