Mares usually come in season durring the spring and summer months (when the sunlight triggers their ovulation cycle). To find out if the mare is in season, she can be “teased”, or checked by a vet. To “tease” a mare, you lead her close to a stallion (unfixed male horse). You need to do this is a safe way/location – such as the stallion in a high/strong stall, because horses can react violently when they come together. If the mare is in season, she will usually squat and let the stallion sniff her. She will also have a “winking” reaction in her genatil area. If she is NOT in season, she will usually squeal and kick at the stallion (that is why you must be safe). If she is not in season, tease her again in a few days.
