How do tree farms that are on clay dirt make their land more fertile?
First of all, clay actually attracts water. It is the smallest of the soil particles. Because it attracts water, the water makes it bind together. Therefore, clay soil is the most nutrient rich, because the soils nutrients are water soluble. Problem is, it is so tightly bound that the roots can’t get to it. So you mix in some type of organic material to break up the clay and improve quality. Most farmers here in Ga top dress their pastures with manure. In our county we have lots of chicken farms, so in spring and fall they spread composted chicken manure. PU! Tree farmers only need to amend the area where the tree is planted. Many types of organic material are used. Which ever is cheaper will do. Many people use shredded limbs, etc. that have been composted. You can buy it by the dump truck load. When planting perennials in almost pure clay, I also mix in contractor’s sand for drainage purposes.
