How do transportation costs affect housing affordability?
Transportation costs are the second largest expense for most households — after mortgage and rent. In some metro areas, households spend more on transportation than housing. In addition, transportation costs have a much greater impact on lower income groups. For some low-income families, up to one-third of their income is spent on transportation costs.
