How do they make old movies look so good on Blu-Ray?
Film is higher definition than Blu-Ray, but the Blu-Ray can only look as good as the film it’s copying. So in order for an old movie to look good on Blu-Ray they often times have to digitally restore the actual physical film itself. This involves scanning each frame (24 for each second of movie) in order to improve the color and clean up the image. This can be a very expensive and time-consuming process and failure to do so may mean we lose the movie forever, so we should be grateful when they take the time to restore old movies.
