How do they determine the ratings on a TV show they decide to cancel?

They use the “Nilsen” method for determining ratings. Basically it means there are a couple of thousand people out there who determine for the rest of us what show gets to live and which one dies. It’s very inaccurate if you ask me, but the bigger problem is that they decide to cancel shows very quickly these days. It used to be that a show was given a few years before they decided that it has low ratings, but now they do that after only a few episodes into the first season… Sometimes it costs us with what can be some of the greatest TV we would ever see (like Commander in Chief you mentioned, and lots of others).
