How do the structure and linguistic devices contribute to the tone and atmosphere of the scene?
This scene starts with the mourning of Lady Anne which sets a depressing tone for the scene. But the rapid verbal exchange between Lady Anne later starts to liven up the atmosphere. And the soliloquy of Richard III which expresses his truimph over his success of courting Lady Anne ends the scnene with a joyful and excited tone. Thus a contrast of tone is made between the beginning and the end of the scene which can capture the audience’s attention and make them feel invovled emotionally. In the conversation between Richard and Lady Anne, the verbal exchange is very rapid with short, one-sentence responses. The atmosphere of this part of the scene is a total contrast to the beginning of the scene where Lady Anne had a revengeful heart and hated Richard for killing her husband. They seem attracted to each other and at times. The lines “Cursed be the hand that made these fatal holes/Cursed be the heart that had the heart to do it” make use of parallel structure and the alliteration of ‘h’
