How do the solstices work in South Africa?
The solstices work in South Africa the same way they work anyplace else. The solstices are not local phenomena like solar noon, or sunrise. The solstice happens in a single moment for the entire planet as a whole. The solstice is the moment when the sun is at its highest elevation in the sky in one hemisphere and lowest in the other. This happens at the beginning of winter in the north when the sun is at its lowest elevation, and again at the beginning of summer in the north when the sun is at its highest elevation.
