How do the ESPN Sunday Night blackouts work? Why do they exist?

ESPN has paid MLB big money for the *EXCLUSIVE* rights to Sunday Night Baseball. They want to be the only game in town and if you want a baseball fix, it’s either ESPN or bust. This blackout only applies to games played on Sunday nights that start after 5:00 PM Eastern time. This blackout affects *VERY* few games, as it is VERY rare that any Sunday game begins after this time frame. Usually, the Sunday game is the only game going on at that time, so there are no other games to blackout. The Rangers will sometimes need to schedule games late on Sunday nights because of the hot Texas sun, or teams making up for Saturday rainouts will need to schedule double-headers that infringe on ESPN’s exclusive window. If a game is played during this window, it *CAN* be shown only to people that are in the teams’ territory. Extra Innings will not get you around this blackout. Let’s again use our theoretical example of Joe in Anaheim. ESPN is scheduled to show the Red Sox at the Yankees starting at 8
