Osypuk, MSc The goal of this study is to explore how place matters for smoking, particularly for different racial/ethnic and socioeconomic groups. This multilevel analysis will examine differential smoking rates by race/ethnicity and by socioeconomic status (SES) across the 50 states, and examine how state population composition and state tobacco policy may explain variability in state smoking rates. This study has four specific aims: (1) To estimate the prevalence of smoking for each state, and rank states on the differences in smoking prevalence for each of the 4 largest race/ethnicity groups, and for each SES group. (2) To analyze whether the differences in smoking prevalence across the states are accounted for by the composition of individuals in the state.
