How do the DRA stages and cumulative scores in 4-8 match F&P?
The DRA assessment books are all ON grade level texts. Therefore Level 40s are all 4th grade, 50s are 5th grade, etc. Aligning with the F&P levels the 40s would align with the range of levels at the 4th grade level (ex: O, P, Q, R) The reason that there is not a “tighter” alignment is that DRA 4-8 is addressing what research tells us about reading at grades 4-8. The focus of reading is beyond the LEVEL and addresses what student can “extract” or “glean” from the given text. The stage and the total score provide the teacher with information necessary to guide instruction. If a 6th grade student scores a 96 on the assessment, s/he falls within the range of 94-103 at the reading stage – middle school- (sixth grade level). The score is on the lower end of that range and therefore the teacher should be encouraged to use an ON GRADE level text for 6th grade and the information on the continuum to help students learn to interact in a deeper way with the text.
