How do The Animatrix and the Enter the Matrix videogame fit into the story?
The Animatrix provides some back story to some of the characters and events that take place after the first film but before Reloaded. “The Final Flight of the Osiris” shows how the crew of the Osiris discovered that the machines were drilling into Zion and how they were able to get the message out to warn everyone – this is discussed early in Reloaded when the ship captains meet in the Matrix (before they’re interrupted by the Agents). “Kid’s Story” deals with the origin of The Kid’s character and why he is so attached to Neo in Reloaded. There are also standalone stories that deal with aspects of The Matrix that the films weren’t able to explore – “Beyond” deals with a particular “glitch” in the Matrix that results in what some neighborhood kids call a “haunted house.” Enter the Matrix provides some information on Niobe and Ghost – the action of the video game takes place parallel to the action of Reloaded.
