How do Teens get Their Drugs?
Teenagers acquire drugs in one of three primary ways: drug dealers, their peers and their parents. Drug dealers have been known to frequent not only high schools and colleges, but middle-schools as well. These predatory figures may introduce drugs to young people by giving them away free at first, getting them hooked and then selling them the product later. Also, many teenagers get their drugs from those in their peer groups. Friends provide a “trusted source” for entry-level drug use that can quickly move from social to habitual. Finally, the most insidious way teenagers acquire drugs is through their parents. Unknowingly, many adults will leave unused prescription medications such as Vicodin or Amphetamines in the medicine cabinet, where the teenager will begin to experiment with them – incorrectly believing that these drugs are safe because they were once prescribed by a doctor.
