How do teacher salary schedules work?

BS – is your basic Bachelors degree. The numbers following it are the number of semester hours of post graduate work you have completed. A typical master’s degree (MA) is often 32-40 semester hours of work. So – the BS designation is for those teachers coming into the profession who simply have their BS as well as their credential. Some districts do credit some credentialing coursework to add to your hours – So depending on the district a new hire might walk into the position at BS +8 or the next highest. You are expected to continue your education forever – Ive been teaching 16 years and I take college courses every other summer or so (state requirement) (yes, we pay for it ourselves) So this is the reason for the post-masters semester hour designation.
