How do symbols help on a map?
Symbols on a map increase the usefullness of the presentation. They help us identify places, lines of division, the routes of roads, rivers, rail lines, and a number of other things. The actual symbols will vary a bit from place to place as the maps vary. Color helps a great deal, too. Rivers are often blue meandering lines or bands. Roads can vary in color, by are often black. Rail lines are a usually a single line with short cross lines closely spaced like the cross ties on railroad tracks. Cities, towns and villages will be dots or circles, with larger ones indicating places of greater population.
