How Do Surf Lifesavers Save Lives?
Technology Professional surf lifesavers employ various tools and technologies to safe lives. The most common is the simple rescue tube or board. The professional lifesaver has this on his person at all times and employs it when forced to swim out in the surf. The tube or board is buoyant and allows a potential drowning victim something to grasp onto while being pulled back into shore by the lifesaver, who may also use a common long surfboard for the same purposes. For rough surf, an inflatable rescue boat or jet ski may be used to reach the victim. Surf boats and jet skies allow the rescue pilot to traverse large breaking waves, and reach the rescue zone with greater efficiency than traditional swimming. Vigilance Professional lifesavers are alert at all times. They are commonly stationed in towers or chairs which sit high above beach, allowing for a view of the distant surf. Lifesavers also patrol along the beach, usually by all-terrain vehicle, and from above by helicopter or plane.
