How do superbugs develop?
Bugs develop genetic mutations quickly because they divide quickly. Every now and then a mutation will be favourable, such as conferring immunity to an antibiotic. To make things worse, bugs can swap bits of their genome called plasmids with other bugs, so one that already has an ampicillin resistance can get another plasmid with, say, methicillin or tetramycin resistance without even having to mutate. This way, some bugs get the full set and are resistant to just about all of the antibiotics.
