How do speed cameras work at multi-lane sites?
Individual fixed digital speed cameras can monitor up to four lanes of travel. For example, in the Eastern Distributor (northbound) cameras have been installed and configured to simultaneously monitor all four lanes of travel in the same direction. This is achieved by the installation of: • piezo-electronic detectors in each lane; • a wide-angle lens camera monitoring all lanes; and • a telephoto lens identifying the registration plate of the speeding vehicle. It is therefore clear which vehicle has been detected speeding. Vehicles cannot avoid camera detection by straddling lanes.
